The Mountaineers
2021. Acrylic and Oil on Canvas. 50 x 60 cm. SOLD During the lockdown winter of 20/21, I watched numerous disaster films, usually about survival. Into the Wild, Everest, Touching the Void etc etc. I was drawn to the genre because of the situation that we all found ourself in. I became interested in the plight of the mountaineer George Mallory, who's attempt to reach the summit of Everest in 1924 ended in disaster when he came so close to achieving the impossible. His body was found 75 years later in 1999. My painting 'Mountaineers' was painted as a metaphor for the current plight of humanity, our attempt to overcome the horrendous Corona Virus pandemic.
